I was getting out of the car. Nothing special, just a normal day. And as I stood up, something hurt. My knee or my back, I am not even sure which, and out came this long "ahhhhh."
You know that sound. The one you used to hear from your parents and quietly promise yourself you would never make.
The night before, I had come across a line that stuck with me:
Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.
Standing there next to the car, it came back to me, and it landed differently. If I am not changing this, I am choosing to grow old in pain.
That was not a fun thought.
Not deciding is still a decision
At the time I was averaging somewhere around 3,500 to 4,000 steps a day. I never decided that. Nobody sits down and says "yes, 4,000 steps, that sounds right for me." It just happened, one comfortable day at a time.
And that is exactly what the quote calls out. I thought of my habits as things that happened to me. The line flips it around. If I see something and leave it alone, I have not stayed neutral. I have picked it. Again, every single day.
So I started choosing differently. I started walking more. Then I started working out. Today I average 10,000 to 11,000 steps a day.
The interesting part is that the quote did not stop being useful once I got moving. I say it to myself more now than I did then. When I do not feel like going for the walk, when skipping a workout sounds very reasonable, it comes back. Am I changing this, or am I choosing it?
Why one line can do what a lecture can't
Here is the thing. I had heard "walk more, take care of yourself" a hundred times. From doctors, from articles, from people who love me. None of it moved me the way one sentence did standing next to a car.
So what was different?
I think a quote is small enough to carry around. Advice is a paragraph. A quote fits in your pocket, and it waits. Most of the time it just sits there. Then one day life hands you a moment, like a sore knee in a parking lot, and the quote finally has somewhere to land.
The words did not change me. The words plus the moment did.
A quote does nothing until a moment gives it somewhere to land.
That is why I collect them. I do not know which one will matter, or when. Some are from books, some from people I admire, some I just picked up along the way. A couple are there purely because they make me laugh.
Here is the full list, as it stands today.

- Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments. — Rose Kennedy
- Happiness watched is greater than happiness lived. — Vir Das
- Success woh nahi jo aasman chhoo le, success woh hai ke aasman chhoone ke baad bhi apne pair zameen pe ho. (Success is not touching the sky. Success is keeping your feet on the ground after you have touched it.)
Just for fun
- You're like a lighthouse in the middle of a desert. Bright, but not very useful.
- You're like a speed bump on a runway.
Most of these will sit quietly in the list for years. That's fine. One of them got me off the couch and walking 10,000 steps a day. I just don't know yet which one is next.
